SMC and BMC pressing

Sheet molding compound (SMC) sheets consist of chopped fiberglass sandwiched between two layers of resin paste. Ready for molding, the SMC is cut into sheets and the “charge pattern” (ply schedule) is assembled on a 120-160 °C (250-325 ºF) heated mold. The mold is closed, clamped, with pressure applied at 35-85 bars (500-1200 psi). The material’s viscosity drops, letting the SMC flow to fill the mold cavity. After the resin has cured, the mold is opened and the part can be removed manually or by using integral ejector pins.

Major SMC markets worldwide include high-volume electrical components and the transportation industry (automotive and trucks essentially).

CRAY VALLEY develops and supplies not only SMC resins but also low profile and low shrink additives for enhanced surface finish.
